Assignors' Message:
Expectations of Officials
1. Check your e-mail regularly (at least twice a day).
2. Keep your availability up-to-date (put your significant days in now (birthdays, etc) as soon as you know of a new commitment update your availability. We often get games to fill with short notice and therefore an updated availability helps everyone.
3. Reply promptly to notifications
4. Keep your contact info up-to-date; list your cell phone number first in contact numbers
5. Emergencies/sickness happens; don’t wait to the last minute to let the assignor know, let us know when you know
6. Know who your partner is and carry the Membership Contact List
7. Procedures to follow at site
officials running late are expected to call the school, their partner if they can and then assignor if need be:
Tim cell 416-505-2298 Carl cell 647 201 4011
Tim home 905-778-0120
For Tim: If it is at night or weekend and you have to call me, please call both numbers (cell first) and leave message if you don’t get me live. If I am not available on my cell, the chances are you will get me or Tracey at home and she has the schedule.
For Carl: Call cell phone, if I don’t answer, leave a message (call back number if it is NOT from the phone you used to call). There is a good chance that I will call you back shortly after you call (as long as I’m not on the court or in a meeting).
Officials at site with no partner are expected to try to contact their partner before contacting the assignor.
Officials are NOT to start a game alone (even if the coaches are pushing you to) unless you have tried to contact the assignor.
Prior to calling the assignor though, TRY to get a hold of your partner.
- if you have a cell phone, ensure that the number is updated and/or on our member list
- if you are en route, have it on
Note: not trying to get a hold of the assignor ensures that you will not be paid the additional amount for working alone
If site is running over ½ hour late, contact assignor, possibly let people coming in after you know
If you have informed the assignor that your partner is not there and
a) he/she gets there (the partner calls assignor immediately to info assignor that they are there or
b) doesn't get there by 1/2 time then contact me again at 1/2.
If something has happened to your partner and there is a double then we can try to get a 2nd official there for the second game if not the first.
If we all work together, we can provide the level of service our clients expect and possibly, save our fellow officials game fees and/or fines. Thanks everyone.
8. When in doubt about anything, check/contact the assignor.
Reports From Site/Unusual Circumstances
Importance of disqualification reports: if a player is disqualified due to unsporting or flagrant behavior a) report to be filled out on game sheet and b) send assignor, vice-president a detailed report by e-mail. If there is an incident at site i.e. problems with a coach or spectators contact assignor and vice-president and let us know what happened. We have an open door policy with not only you but our clients. We would much rather hear about something from you first. We follow the same procedure whether the concern received is a complaint from site about an official or official sending something about a coach. We treat it as a potential development process for all involved. We do contact the individuals and a) get their perspective/view of what happened b) discuss if there is something that could have been done differently. If it has to be reviewed at a higher level, we will take it to the YRAA or to our Executive.
Inclement weather:
This is a reminder that in the event of inclement weather, the individual officials are responsible to call the school they are to officiate and verify if the game will be played or not. This is particularly (but not exclusively) applicable to private schools and the SSAF which may be having teams coming from distances and our northern schools such as HT Bradford, Bradford, Sutton, Keswick and Lady of the Lake who have separate busing companies than most of our region. If we are contacted about a cancellation, we will use all of our efforts to contact the officials but we do not always get the message.
We realize that determining what is inclement weather and not isn't easy. We don't need everyone phoning everywhere with the first drop of snow. If you turn on the radio and hear there are all kinds of traffic problems or a winter storm warning has been put in effect or you look out the window and all you see is white...probably best to call.
Thanks and please feel free to ask for any clarifications about an assignment or about he assigning process
